A couple days ago I was reading a thread on Douglas Rushkoff's blog rushkoff.com. Doug had been mugged at gunpoint directly in front of his home in Park Slope at 9PM on Christmas Eve. Understandably, he was really shaken-up.

He had blogged about his experience, and lots of people wrote comments to support him. Many people shared their experiences of being mugged and offered good advice on how best to react to that awful situation.

It was a fascinating discussion. The thread became very popular. It wasn't long before a few trolls arrived and started posting anonymous negativity. The blog's author, Mr. Rushkoff, still dealing with all of the mixed-up emotions that follow a traumatic event like being mugged, took some of the troll's barbs personally.

Anyhow, the thread was so long that it took me hours to read in its entirety. Once I had finished reading the last post, I clicked refresh to comment on the topic and POOF! The thread was gone. The author had erased it from existence.

It was a bit of a sad moment. I wanted to share the thread with my girlfriend and talk more about the possibility of muggings and what to do in that situation. I believe Doug had said some things in the thread that he later regretted, and decided to erase the whole thing because of it.

Well, I suppose that's just part of blogging. Sticking the heel of one's foot in one's jowls. I have totally regretted postings I have made here, and other places on the net. I'm reprinting a post I had made around three years ago to the day:

The Very Best of 2003

#1) Snow -Dudes, I like snow. Seems like a million winters have come and past since the last time we were treated to so many snowfalls of delight. Seems every time I turn the corner now I'm greeted by puffy flutterings from the sky, and I for one welcome them. If forced at gunpoint to choose between rain or snow [and by traveling to Flatbush everyday, one must prepare oneself for scenarios such as these] I will always choose snow. Snow makes New Jersey pretty. It brings a twinkle to a young child's admittedly already twinkly eye. Plus it clams-up all those yammering global warming watchdogs for once. I like snow.

Okay, back to 2007. What an idiot I was! I cannot believe I wrote:

"...it clams-up all those yammering global warming watchdogs for once."

Seriously. I'm just as bad as George W. I would like to publicly apologize about this old post. I'm green, I recycle everything I can manage to, I try not to create waste, etc. I really have to cut down on take-out food. All of those wasteful doggie-bags are helping kill Father Winter.

I'm sorry, Internet. I love you.
